What If Toddler Tantrums Aren’t Bad Behaviour? A Parent’s Perspective Shift That Changes Everything

“He’s Just Testing You” – The Advice That Didn’t Sit Right

We’ve all heard it:
"Your child’s testing your limits."
"Don’t give in—they’re doing it for attention!"

And if you're like many of us, you may have believed it for a while. I know I did.

Until one day, I didn’t.

The Sentence That Changed Everything

A child therapist once said something that hit me like a wave:

“A tantrum is a nervous system asking for help.”

Let that sink in.

This wasn’t a child plotting revenge with building blocks or melting down to ruin our day. It was a tiny human, overwhelmed, and not knowing how to cope.

That single line reframed every meltdown I’d ever experienced with my child.

What If My Job Isn’t to Stop the Tantrum… But to Anchor My Child Through It?

When my toddler has a meltdown now, I don’t rush to fix it or distract him.
I don’t go into discipline mode.

Instead, I focus on being his anchor.

I kneel beside him. I hold him. I whisper:

  • “I’m here.”

  • “You’re safe.”

  • “I know it’s hard.”

And something amazing happens.

The storm still comes. But it passes faster.
Because he doesn’t feel alone in it anymore.

Emotional Regulation Doesn’t Start With Them—It Starts With Us

Here’s the truth I’ve learned through many messy, teary, toy-strewn afternoons:

Toddlers don’t throw tantrums to manipulate—they do it because their brain is still developing the ability to cope.

They don’t need fixing. They need co-regulation—a calm adult showing them how to feel safe again.

And most importantly: regulation is not taught through words alone—it’s modeled in how we show up in those hard moments.

So now, I choose to be the calm in their storm.
Not the storm to match it.

A Tamil Saying Comes to Mind:

"Kuzhandhai azhuththaal, boomiyum kulungum."
(When a child cries, even the earth trembles.)

Yes, tantrums shake us. But we don’t have to shake back. We can ground them instead.

Because dressing up shouldn't mean dressing down their emotions.
